You can cut food on granite countertops, but it’s not necessarily a great idea. While granite is relatively hard and scratch resistant, it is possible to scratch it over time. The other drawbacks are that granite is somewhat porous, meaning that the stone can absorb some of the foodstuff and grow bacteria (though wiping it clean immediately after use should prevent this largely). The other reason to avoid cutting directly on granite is that it is incredibly hard on your knives. It will dull your blades much quicker than acrylic or plastic cutting boards will.
